Jewellery Thead Types

There seems to be a lot of confusion caused by the different types of threads used in body jewellery, the purpose of this document is to resolve some of these ambiguities.

Externally Threaded Jewellery

This is the 'standard' for small gauge jewellery (1.2, 1.6 and 2.4mm) where the 'teeth' of the thread are located on the bar, as shown in the picture.

You would require an accessory (ball, cone, spike etc.) that is also externally threaded to fit this type of jewellery. Don't be confused by the name, the 'teeth' of the thread are on the inside of the accessory.

Internally Threaded Jewellery

This is the standard for jewellery of 3.2mm and above – as well as an option for small gauge jewellery. This can be identified by the bar having a cavity in the end, in which the accessory fits.

You would require an accessory (ball, cone, spike etc.) that is also internally threaded to fit this type of jewellery. Don't be confused by the name, the 'teeth' of the thread are on the outside of the accessory.
